Capital letters in braille

Braille letters are lower case unless marked. The capital sign, a single dot 6 (⠠), goes in front of a capital letter: “Hello” is ⠠⠓⠑⠇⠇⠕.

A capital letter

One dot 6 makes the next letter a capital. Names, days and months, and the start of a sentence all take it: Emma ⠠⠑⠍⠍⠁, Monday ⠠⠍⠕⠝⠙⠁⠽, I ⠠⠊.

A whole word in capitals

Two dot 6 cells (⠠⠠) make the whole word capitals, up to the next space: USA is ⠠⠠⠥⠎⠁, HELLO is ⠠⠠⠓⠑⠇⠇⠕.

Several words in capitals

For three or more words in capitals, Unified English Braille uses the capitals passage: three dot 6 cells (⠠⠠⠠) before the first word, and the capitals terminator, dots 6 and 3 (⠠⠄), after the last. “THANK YOU VERY MUCH” is ⠠⠠⠠⠞⠓⠁⠝⠅ ⠽⠕⠥ ⠧⠑⠗⠽ ⠍⠥⠉⠓⠠⠄.

The capital alphabet

Remember it, don't just look it up

Capitals are one extra dot in front of letters you already know. Braille a Day brings it back tomorrow to answer from memory, then again just before you'd forget. Five minutes a day.
